Starting with Santiago, which is the African origin of the archipelago, the volcanic island of Fogo, the lively cultural metropolis of São Vicente, the tropical greenery of Santo Antão, and the sandy beaches on Sal, on this trip you will find everything Cape Verde has to offer.

DAY 1 – DAY 3: SANTIAGO

Santiago is the main island of this lovely archipelago and more African than the other islands. The history of Cape Verde began here in the 15th century. In the former capital, Cidade Velha, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, you can see the evidence of the first settlement. To this day, the pillory and other historical witnesses recall the sad history of the town, which was once a focal point of the transatlantic slave trade.
In today’s capital, Praia, the historic Plateau district with its colonial buildings and its colourful, lively fruit and vegetable market invites you to take a stroll. Later, immerse yourself in the African hustle and bustle of the Sucupira market – full of colours, smells and experiences.
Perhaps you would also like to take a tour of the island. Santiago fascinates with, among other things, its mountain landscapes of volcanic origin. In Assomada, the second-largest town, you have the opportunity to visit a large street market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. In the north, Tarrafal impresses with a small but beautiful sandy beach.
For travellers who enjoy being active, Santiago offers some interesting hikes through almost untouched nature.

DAY 4 – Day 5: FOGO

You fly to the volcanic island of Fogo. Fogo means fire, and the highest mountain in the country, Pico do Fogo, lived up to its name during its last eruption at the end of 2014. The crater area, known as Chã das Caldeiras, forms a spectacular backdrop with its lava flows from various eruptions, its green vines and, of course, the volcano itself. The volcano lies at the centre of the small island, and cooled lava flows wind their way down the mountains into the neighbouring farmland, which completes the picture all the way to the sea.
The main town, São Filipe, is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in Cape Verde and impresses with its colonial flair, numerous inviting squares and its location on the Atlantic, looking out to the small neighbouring island of Brava.

Day 6 – Day 7: SÃO VICENTE

You say goodbye to the southern islands and make your way to São Vicente, which you reach by plane after a stopover on Santiago. São Vicente is known above all for Mindelo, the second-largest city in Cape Verde. Its dreamlike location on a bay, colonial houses, lively markets, historic squares and the best music scene in the archipelago … you shouldn’t miss it. Laginha, the sheltered town beach, invites you to linger. Here you can swim to your heart’s content, laze in the sun or join the many Mindelenses of all ages for whom the beach is also an ‘open-air fitness club’: see and be seen, do some sport, enjoy life.
The island’s hinterland is rather dry. On Monte Verde, the highest mountain on the island, small-scale farming is carried out on soil moistened by the mist of the clouds. In good weather, you can see the neighbouring islands of Santo Antão and Santa Luzia from here and, on a clear day, even as far as Raso, Branco and São Nicolau.
With its mixture of white sand and black lava, the beach of ‘Praia Grande’ offers a contrast to the wild waves of the Atlantic.

Day 8 – Day 10: SANTO ANTÃO

Early in the morning, you take the ferry to the neighbouring island (approx. 1 hour). Santo Antão is the second-largest and also the greenest island in the archipelago. Its spectacular mountain scenery fascinates every nature lover. Shaped by agriculture, which supplies not only the islanders but also the inhabitants of São Vicente, Santo Antão also captivates with its rural charm.
The Paúl valley is the greenest and also the most popular valley in Cape Verde. Tropical greenery surrounded by incredible mountain scenery … small settlements … a simple life and friendly people – that is Paúl! The rest of the north of Santo Antão also offers pure nature, with a wealth of varied and spectacular views. We particularly recommend a drive or hike through the ‘Ribeira Grande’ valley to Chã de Igreja. Fontainhas, one of the most beautifully situated villages in Cape Verde, is also well worth a visit. You stay overnight in Ponta do Sol, a pleasant fishing village in the north-west of the island.
Cape Verdeans love their national drink, grogue! It mostly comes from Santo Antão, and you will come across it often during your stay on the island. In some distilleries, the sugar cane grown here is still pressed by oxen. The sugar cane juice is then turned into a high-proof rum. Delicious and available everywhere. But beware: it packs a punch!

Day 11 – Day 13: SAL

Ferry back to São Vicente and flight to Sal.
RELAXATION! Do nothing, just laze on the beach. Or would you rather dance to lively rhythms in one of the clubs at night? Sal is one of the three sandy islands. Relax in the sun, stroll along the beach, take a dip … enjoy a few days of real holiday and let the impressions of the last few days sink in. In Santa Maria, you will find the most beautiful beach on the island as well as numerous shops, restaurants and bars. The tourist infrastructure is very well developed. For those who still feel like doing something, the island offers a wide range of leisure activities such as beach activities, day tours, boat trips and much more.
We recommend an excursion to the salt pans! Sal means salt, and the island once had a flourishing salt industry. A special highlight is floating weightlessly in the brine. Not quite the Dead Sea, but fascinating nonetheless.

Day 14: Return flight home
