Starting with Santiago, which is the African origin of the archipelago, the volcanic island of Fogo, the lively cultural metropolis of São Vicente, the tropical greenery of Santo Antão, and the sandy beaches on Sal, on this trip you will find everything Cape Verde has to offer.

Day 1 – Day 3: SANTIAGO

Compared to the other islands, Santiago is the main island of the lovely archipelago and is more African. In the 15th century, the history of Cape Verde began here. At Cidade Velha, the former capital, which belongs to the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage, it is possible to see the evidence of the first settlement. Even today, the pillory and other contemporary witnesses remind us of the sad history of the place, which was once a focal point in the transatlantic slave trade. In today’s capital Praia, the historic Plateau district with its colonial buildings and colourful and lively fruit and vegetable market invites you to take a stroll. Later on, immerse yourself in the African hustle and bustle at the Sucupira market – full of colours, smells and experiences. Perhaps you would also like to take a tour of the island. Santiago is fascinating with its mountainous landscapes of volcanic origin, among other things. The second largest city, Assomada, has a large street market on Wednesdays and Saturdays. Towards the north, Tarrafal is impressive with a small but fine sandy beach.

For travellers who like to exercise, Santiago offers some interesting hikes through almost untouched nature.

Day 4 – Day 5: FOGO

You will fly to the volcanic island of Fogo. Fogo means fire, and its highest mountain, Pico do Fogo, lived up to its name during the last eruption at the end of 2014. The crater area, called Chã das Caldeiras, creates a spectacular backdrop with its lava flows created by various volcanic eruptions, its green vines and, naturally, the volcano itself. Located in the centre of the small island, cooled lava flows meander down the mountains to the adjacent agricultural areas, which round off the picture all the way to the sea.

The capital São Filipe is undoubtedly one of the most beautiful places in Cape Verde and is impressive with its colonial flair, numerous inviting squares and its location on the Atlantic Ocean with views of the small neighbouring island of Brava.

Day 6 – Day 7: SÃO VICENTE

You will say goodbye to the southern islands and make your way to São Vicente. You will arrive on the island by plane after a stopover in Santiago. São Vicente is well-known mainly because of Mindelo, which is the second-largest city in Cape Verde. The dreamlike location on a bay, colonial houses, lively markets, historic squares and the best music scene in the archipelago … you can’t miss it. The city beach Laginha with its sheltered location invites you to linger. Here you can swim to your heart’s content, lie lazily in the sun or join the many Mindelensians of all ages, for whom the beach is also an ‘open-air fitness club’: see and be seen, engage in sports, enjoy life.

The surrounding countryside of the island is rather dry. On Monte Verde, which is the highest mountain on the island, small-scale agriculture is practised on soil moistened by the haze of the clouds. Depending on the weather, you have a view of the neighbouring islands of Santo Antao, Santa Luzia and, on a good day, even Raso, Branco and São Nicolau.

The beach ‘Praia Grande’ offers a contrast to the wild waves of the Atlantic with its mixture of white sand and black lava.

Day 8 – Day 10: SANTO ANTÃO

Early in the morning, you will take the ferry to the neighbouring island (duration approx. 1 hour). Santo Antão with its spectacular mountains is the second largest and greenest island in the archipelago. Every nature lover will be fascinated by its spectacular mountains. Characterised by agriculture, which supplies the islanders as well as the inhabitants of São Vicente, Santo Antão stands out for its rural charm. The Paúl Valley is the greenest and also the most popular valley in Cape Verde. Tropical greenery surrounded by incredible mountain scenery … small settlements … simple life and friendly people – that is Paúl! In other respects, too, the north of Santo Antão offers pure nature. A variety of equally varied and spectacular views. We would particularly recommend a drive/hike through the “Ribeira Grande” valley to Cha de Igreja. Fontainhas, which is one of the most beautifully situated places in Cape Verde, also invites you to visit. You will spend the night in Ponta do Sol, a pleasant fishing village in the northwest of the island.

The Cape Verdeans love the national drink grogue! It usually comes from Santo Antão, and you will come across it often during your stay on this island. The sugar cane that is grown here is sometimes still pressed by oxen in the distilleries. The sugar cane juice is then used to make a high-proof rum. Delicious and available everywhere. But beware: it has something to it!

Day 11 – Day 13: SAL

The ferry rides back to São Vicente and the flight to Sal.

RELAX! Nothing to do, just lie lazily on the beach. Or perhaps rather dance to the lively rhythms at night in one of the discos? The island of Sal is one of the three sandy islands. To relax in the sun, to stroll along the beach, to take a bath…enjoy a few days of real holiday and let the impressions of the last days pass in review. At Santa Maria, you will find the most beautiful beach on the island as well as numerous shops, restaurants and bars. Besides, the tourist infrastructure is very well developed. For those who still feel like doing something, the island offers a variety of leisure activities such as beach activities, day tours, boat trips and much more.

Let us recommend an excursion to the salt mines! Sal means salt and the island used to have a flourishing salt production. It is a special highlight to float weightlessly in the brines. Not quite the dead sea, but fascinating nonetheless.

Day 14: Return flight to Europe
