I am just about to book our flights to Sal for next July. Thomson flights is the only option at about £630 per person. Expensive!
With all the new developments gradually being completed, does anyone know why there are no low cost airlines starting a service to Sal.
Is it just lack of demand or are there some other reasons. Such as government restrictions or whatever deals have been done with the existing airlines to limit flights.

Hi Daniel
Thanks for the link. Unfortunately those cheap flights are only available at very short notice and often only 1 or 2 seats.
So it's not really possible to book a holiday for a family of 4 for next year at those prices.

My question really is why are there no schedule airlines flying from the UK to Sal. While ever its only Thomson, seats for flight only will be limited and therefore expensive.
By next year there will be hundreds of villas and apartments completed, so how are all the people going get to Sal without scheduled flights

TAP fly via Lisbon daily scheduled flights from Heathrow and Gatwick. It's a much more comfortable service but you do have to change planes so it takes longer. I combined it with a day in Lisbon last time. Lovely city, a couple of Euros to get in and out on the airport bus.

Hi Iv'e just done a comparison of price for the last week October first week November (school term) for 3 adults.

Thomsons from Birmingham including luggage 15kgs pp £1,773

Tap from Heathrow via Lisbon inc luggage 20Kgs pp 1,751 Euros. approx £1,521 (1.24 to the pound)

The flight times out of Heathrow are better but not so good out of Sal on the return.

yes TAP is a very good alternative to Thomson, specially for those who travel to other islands than Sal or Boavista, as TAP offers direct flights to Sao Vicente and Santiago islands also.
In this case you do not need to book with TACV between islands, and no hotel needed for overnight which is often the case.

For flights to Cape Verde TAP includes 30kg luggage - please check this again.

I have just done a price comparison for the February half term next year. TAP from Heathrow on the Saturday is £100 cheaper than Thomson on the Tuesday from Birmingham. 15kg luggage with Thomson, 30kg luggage with TAP. TAP takes a little longer, but takes fewer holiday days and includes more luggage weight which is handy if you are taking stuff over with you.
I also looked to spend a night in lisbon to have a look around. Same price to go on the friday evening with 22 hour lay over. Hotel Friday night, all day Saturday in Lisbon, Saturday evening flight to Sal, flight back following late Friday night/early saturday morning.
2 adults and 1 child £1500 give or take a few pence.

I've just booked flights via TAP from Heathrow to Praia in October.
I didn't appreciate the amount of tax/fees are incurred and it is difficult to see how airlines can discount (except by flying out of cheaper airports) considering the actual fare is only £200 pp.
This was the break down I was given.

Price Information

Total Amount: 1418.25 GBP

Fuel Surcharge (YQ)

Portugal - Security Tax (PT)

Portugal - Passenger Service Charge (YP)

United Kingdom - Air Passengers Duty (GB)

United Kingdom - Passenger Service Charge (UB)

Cape Verde - Airport Embarkation Tax (CV)

Credit Card Surcharge (OB)

Number of passengers

Total per Passenger Type

Note: Additional taxes may be charged locally.

Shocked to find the Thomson flights don't include any luggage.
£32 extra for 15kgs. That makes the flights next july £661 per person.
So for the family of 4 with seats booked sitting together its over £2700.

Hi David,

Thomson flights always get cheaper nearer the time but if you have booked the time off work and have kids it's always a gamble. Try TAP from either Heathrow or Gatwick I'm certain that would be cheaper and as Daniel has pointed out you get 30Kgs of hold luggage each plus 7Kgs of hand luggage. Also they fly most days so you can maximise your holidays better.

Hi blue

Thanks. We're going to book with Tap, and add an extra day on. £ 558 per person with 30kg luggage, meals and sitting together included. A much better deal than Thomson

That's great news that Transavia, the Dutch low cost airline are starting twice weekly flights to Sal from Amsterdam. You can find return flights from under 300 euros.
Unfortunately for me they are marketing this service as winter sun and only flying October to March, and I'm going in July.
Let's hope there is enough demand for them to make it a year round service. Then maybe one of the UK low cost airlines will take notice and give Thomson some competition.
